Panasonic has launched its 85in professional plasma display, which is brighter, lighter and thinner than previous models, writes Paddy Baker. It also fills a gap in the Panasonic plasma range - between the 103in and 65in models.

As European senior marketing manager Enrique Robledo pointed out, the 65in plasma is becoming a commodity product, while budget restrictions will limit the uptake of the 103in model.

The 85in model, named the TH-85PF12, is the first professional display to feature Panansonic's NeoPDP technology, which will be rolled out across the company's plasma range. This is the result of new material and process technology, as well as refinements to circuit and drive technology.

The Full HD display provides a brighter image with a contrast ratio of 40,000:1 - which cannot be matched by LCD, says Panasonic. The brighter image is said to come from improved phosphor gas purity and a reduced gap between pixels. Colour gradation is also smoother.

Ever since blue LEDs appeared in the 1990’s, a cascade of development and system evolution has advanced solid state lighting to become a viable and prosperous technology foundation. Today, LED technology is used for general lighting in small and large venues, in the automotive market, and in video displays, roadside signs, and digital signage.

According to Kevin Dowling, Vice President of Innovation for Philips Color Kinetics, the hospitality and retail markets are primary drivers for white light sources, and the broadcast market favors the technology for quality and long-lasting light sources. “Cove and under shelf lighting is driving LED usage because it’s a natural fit for that application,” he adds.

LEDs have come a long way in a short time. Dowling notes that the development of blue LEDs, and the subsequent creation of broadband white light by adding a phosphor coating, occurred in less than 20 years. “The first white LEDs were gray and dismal and there were technology hurdles in how they were driven and controlled,” he says. “In 2000-2004, there was development in improving phosphors and the efficacy of blue LEDs, as well as packages for high power light output. Since 2004, LEDs continue to improve at pace that the industry is astonished by. Efficacy, light output and quality are improving faster than we projected.”

Long Live Blu-Ray

Thursday, August 13, 2009 0 comments

Toshiba is taking a final step down from the HD TV war and will enter the Blu-ray market, according to reports from Japanese newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun.
The newspaper said the Japanese electronics manufacturer would introduce play-only models that read Blu-ray discs and DVDs by the end of the year. With the demise of HD DVD and rising Blu-ray sales Toshiba was under huge pressure to throw its support behind the victorious format.

Although it seems like the obvious choice for Toshiba, many will see it as a huge blow to the company that desperately fought the Blu-ray format with HD DVD. The company had tried various avenues, including releasing an enhanced DVD player, before succumbing to the prevailing standard.

Yomiuri also reported that its “sources” had said Toshiba was attempting to supersede Blu-ray with “next-generation” technology before finally accepting that the standard had become too big to ignore.

Although details from Toshiba are presently scant, many news sites are already quoting BD 18 as the model number of the new player.

Vaddio, manufacturer and OEM distributor of PTZ cameras and camera control systems, equipped Canadian-based Applied Electronics with a TrackVIEW automated camera tracking system to record class lectures and presentations for remote viewing at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. Mackintosh-Corry Hall Classroom with Vaddio Queens University Principal, Dr. Thomas R. Williams, created several different taskforces throughout the university with the direction to explore, review and make preliminary recommendations on key issues facing the university, both in short term and long term. One of these taskforces focused on alternatives in curriculum delivery outside of the classroom. Video streaming would allow students to access classes from another room on campus or even from their own living room, eliminating the need for more classroom space. "We were looking for a solution that would help automate the capturing of lectures and presentations," explained Luc Wauters, analyst, ITServices at Queen's University, who specialises in Teaching & Learning Support. "We needed a scalable solution that was worry free and did not necessarily require a camera operator."With the guidance of Wauters, Vaddio’s TrackVIEW system was installed in the Faculty and Staff Learning Facility in Mackintosh-Corry Hall, a 65-seat, tiered lecture theatre. TrackVIEW is a presenter-controlled camera system that incorporates both monitor-based tracking and camera pre-set tracking.

Following revelations that extending the technology to PCs could drastically revolutionise working practices, Microsoft held a demonstration of possible uses. The company showed how multiple touchscreens, combined with voice and gesture control, could create a futuristic office environment.

Technology review site, CNET reported from the Washington demonstration saying that it included hologram-like videoconferencing, a virtual digital assistant and multiple surface computers, along with voice-, touch- and gesture-recognition technology.

The demonstration depicted an office that would completely immerse employees, with a multi-touch surface computer as a desk and displays for office walls. This creates a hugely versatile environment as the wall displays can act as a virtual window or extra workspace. Microsoft demonstrated workspace options, transforming the walls into a collection of digital photos and a corkboard of sticky notes. The demonstrator also used depth cameras to place himself within an architectural demonstration. He was then able to virtually walk around a building concept.

Telepresence to "take-off" in 2009

Friday, June 26, 2009 0 comments

Expect 2009 to be another solid year for telepresence, for at least two reasons. One is the steadily declining cost of hardware. For example, LifeSize Communications’ Express system sells for about €3,259 sans HD display. All of that makes it easier for more enterprises to make a business case for telepresence.

Another market driver is budget-cutting: Sure, telepresence systems and the bandwidth they require are still relatively expensive. But those costs often are offset by savings in flights and hotels when executives – the major users of telepresence – don’t have to travel as often.

“I think telepresence will be big, in part because they’ve now come out with executive models, which are for individuals at a price point that’s a lot more attractive than $300,000 [€236,000] for a room,” says Stan Schatt, vice president and research director at ABI Research, which tracks the telecom and tech industries. “Telepresence is already a force in multinational [enterprises] and Europe and will continue to grow pretty significantly.” (Thanks to InAVate for this interesting information).

Coming soon to a table near you!

A tiny projection engine that turns tables into touchscreens will be available to OEMs later this year. Light Blue Optics (LBO), headquartered in Cambridge, UK, unveiled the touch-enabled pico projector earlier this month at a Society for Information Display meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The holographic laser projection technology creates video and still WVGA – QVGA images. The image produced will be ten lumens or more, depending on the content shown. As the technology is laser-based, images remain in focus at all distances from the projector and the need for a focus wheel is eliminated. (Thanks to InAVate) for the info. Check back here at the Digicom Blog for more details later in the year.

Infocomm 2009 Kicks Off

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 0 comments

Infocomm 2009, the Industry’s annual AV trade show, kicks-off today in Orlando Florida. We expect there to be many exciting announcements and new products coming out of the show this year.

For starters, Extron Electronics (Annaheim CA) has just announced that they will be unveiling their new touch screen control system, called the “Touchlink.” This will likely upset the folks at Crestron and AMX, but we’ll have to wait until the doors open to find out more. Stay tuned for more news from the show floor over the coming days.
Following a contract with digital office equipment provider Ricoh, University College Dublin (UCD) has become the first Irish university to adopt a green printing policy.

The new deal between Ricoh and UCD will see UCD adopting 'duplex printing' as standard, automatically using both sides of the page for printing purposes.

While this is a straightforward and simple adoption, it is expected to reduce UCD’s carbon footprint by several million pages per year.

In January of 2009, I wrote the year’s "Top 10 Digital Signage Trends." I thought I would revisit my predictions to see what I had missed; what had I predicted correctly and what incorrectly?

As it turns out, I scored an 8 out of 10, having missed two trends that are now apparent. Following is a revised Top 10 (plus one additional) Trends for 2009:
