NEC Display Solutions announced the 46” MultiSync X461HB high-bright professional display. This new model is enhanced by more than 30 advanced features of the Digital Signage Technology Suite that allow the display to stand out in heavily-lit environments.

With a brightness measurement at 1500 cd/m² and contrast ratio of 3500:1, the MultiSync X461HB offers 110 percent higher brightness than NEC’s previous-generation displays. The MultiSync X Series display is ideal for environments heavy with ambient light, such as corporate lobbies, atriums and restaurants.

Its advanced features detect nearby light and automatically adjust the display according to its surroundings. The MultiSync X461HB includes ambient light sensor technology, which automatically adjusts the backlight depending on the ambient lighting brightness and maximizes the power management feature.

Its advanced thermal protection begins with an extra thermal layer on the display panel to diffuse heat and follows with a fan-based technology specifically designed to work in both landscape and portrait modes. Internal temperature sensors control self-protective circuits, while special self- diagnostics communicate the status of thermal characteristics. The thermal protection can be monitored and controlled both locally and remotely. Thanks to rAVe for this tidbit. Telepresence to "take-off" in 2009

Friday, June 26, 2009 0 comments

Expect 2009 to be another solid year for telepresence, for at least two reasons. One is the steadily declining cost of hardware. For example, LifeSize Communications’ Express system sells for about €3,259 sans HD display. All of that makes it easier for more enterprises to make a business case for telepresence.

Another market driver is budget-cutting: Sure, telepresence systems and the bandwidth they require are still relatively expensive. But those costs often are offset by savings in flights and hotels when executives – the major users of telepresence – don’t have to travel as often.

“I think telepresence will be big, in part because they’ve now come out with executive models, which are for individuals at a price point that’s a lot more attractive than $300,000 [€236,000] for a room,” says Stan Schatt, vice president and research director at ABI Research, which tracks the telecom and tech industries. “Telepresence is already a force in multinational [enterprises] and Europe and will continue to grow pretty significantly.” (Thanks to InAVate for this interesting information).

Coming soon to a table near you!

A tiny projection engine that turns tables into touchscreens will be available to OEMs later this year. Light Blue Optics (LBO), headquartered in Cambridge, UK, unveiled the touch-enabled pico projector earlier this month at a Society for Information Display meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The holographic laser projection technology creates video and still WVGA – QVGA images. The image produced will be ten lumens or more, depending on the content shown. As the technology is laser-based, images remain in focus at all distances from the projector and the need for a focus wheel is eliminated. (Thanks to InAVate) for the info. Check back here at the Digicom Blog for more details later in the year.

Infocomm 2009 Kicks Off

Infocomm 2009, the Industry’s annual AV trade show, kicks-off today in Orlando Florida. We expect there to be many exciting announcements and new products coming out of the show this year.

For starters, Extron Electronics (Annaheim CA) has just announced that they will be unveiling their new touch screen control system, called the “Touchlink.” This will likely upset the folks at Crestron and AMX, but we’ll have to wait until the doors open to find out more. Stay tuned for more news from the show floor over the coming days.
Following a contract with digital office equipment provider Ricoh, University College Dublin (UCD) has become the first Irish university to adopt a green printing policy.

The new deal between Ricoh and UCD will see UCD adopting 'duplex printing' as standard, automatically using both sides of the page for printing purposes.

While this is a straightforward and simple adoption, it is expected to reduce UCD’s carbon footprint by several million pages per year.

Keith Kelsen is executive chairman of the board of The MediaTile Company and chair of the Content Committee for the Digital Signage Association.

In January of 2009, I wrote the year’s "Top 10 Digital Signage Trends." I thought I would revisit my predictions to see what I had missed; what had I predicted correctly and what incorrectly?

As it turns out, I scored an 8 out of 10, having missed two trends that are now apparent. Following is a revised Top 10 (plus one additional) Trends for 2009:
