Death Warrant for the VGA!

Monday, February 13, 2012 • • 0 comments

An industry wide agreement to phase out VGA completely by 2015, and to standardised solely on HDMI and DisplayPort is being supported by rival processor giants Intel and AMD. VGA is passed its sell by date with HDMI and DisplayPort allowing slimmer designs and supporting higher resolution with deeper colour. It is important that display technology keeps up with the digital rich world we now live in and reinforces this move by Intel and AMD.

By moving to the latest digital display interfaces will allow manufacturers to focus investment on new innovations rather having to solve challenges of supporting analog interfaces on their new products and technology.

After many years of false dawns, Near Field Communications (NFC) has finally gained some traction. 2011 has proved to be a year of acceptance for NFC with it slowly but surely becoming more mainstream. Several telecommuncations and financial services companies are working together to promote NFC throughout Europe. Put simply, NFC is a wireless connectivity technology that enables two-way communcation between electronic devices such as the transfer of contact details or credentials. It is also possible to perform contactless transactions, access digital content and connect devices with a single touch or "tap".

There are many advantages to NFC, primarily consumers will be able to access new services conveniently. It will give them an option to use their mobile device as a travel card, debit/credit/loyalty card or even as a ticket to an event. From a marketing point of view it will provide easy access to digital content and greater consumer engagement.

It looks as if 2012 will provide huge opportunities for NFC. ISM research indicates that 35 million NFC compatible handsets arrived in 2011 with this set to increase to 80 million in 2012 and will reach 920 million by 2015. There will be a number of high profile occasions in 2012 which will involve NFC. Firstly the rollout of Google Wallet which uses a NFC platform to pay for goods, redeem coupons and earn reward points using a mobile phone. Secondly The Olympic Games in London this summer may become a proving ground for NFC. Organisers have targeted contactless  payments as a viable way of crowd control and convenience. Visa the official payment partner of the Olympic Games will be promoting m-commerce and NFC through its mobile app, iCart, which turns a smart phone into a payment device.

NFC is experiencing some teething problems. Such issues exist surrounding unclear business models and disagreements between different stakeholders of the ecosystem. However, some are speculating that NFC may trigger a financial revolution with it being the cornerstone of mobile commerce.

Devices such as smartphones and tablets continue to transform the way companies do business. What is driving this transformation is the myriad of apps available which allows the creation and collaboration of content as well as access to invaluable business information on the go. Here are some apps which can make you more efficient in your working life and are available on multiple platforms.
Dropbox is a free app that lets you bring all your files whether they are photos, videos or docs with you anywhere you go. Once your folders are synced, it is possible to access them from multiple devices as well as the Dropbox website. There is a selective sync option which gives you the choice as to what folders are synced to your various devices. This is beneficial to users who have limited hard drive space.

Neu.Annotate PDF enables the annotating of pdf documents with drawings, highlighting, text notes, photos, stamps, personal signature, filling out and tagging of documents as well as deleting and adding pages. The convenient palm guard feature allows you to rest your hand on the screen.

Business Card Reader scans your business cards and by using character recognition technology it analyses the information on the card. The app then uploads the contact information directly to your address book. The most impressive element to Business Card Reader is its integration with LinkedIn. It distinguishes between home and mobile numbers, first/last names, job title and company allowing for a specific person to be identified on LinkedIn.

SimpleNote
is a similar concept to the popular app Evernote with less features. It is plan text with no formatting and its organisation is based on tagging. It is very effective at keeping large quantities of notes accessible, arranged and synchronized with other devices. SimpleNote stores notes to the device meaning if you're away from Wi-Fi you will still be able to access your material. It also has a built in versioning, so if you make a change to your note, you won't be in danger of losing the original. Compared to Evernote, SimpleNote is a lot faster as excessive amounts of storage is required by Evernote to give you the features it has.

iPad Tip! A tip when using the iPad is to save and convert Excel to Numbers, Powerpoint to Keynote and Word to Pages. This will allow you to access documents such as price lists and presentations easily. To use the programmes successfully you need to use an iPad 3G and use the cloud or use an iPad 64GB for storage purposes. There are few differences between the functionality of the programmes, however it would probably be fair to say that Keynote has an advantage over Powerpoint with regards the large number of templates that haven't been overused.
